Last Fall, I went to the dermatologist after noticing a mole that appeared discolored and misshapen. It was removed by the dermatologist, but upon lab analysis, was found to be a malignant melanoma. I had surgery in August 2001 , known as a "wide excision", on my chest to positively remove the cancerous cells, as well as a "sentinel node biopsy". I am now a CANCER SURVIVOR!!! IT'S GONE!! A larger cut than expected, about 6" across and a dissection of my lymph nodes revealed no spread, and all was removed successfully...But to reiterate:The doc said, I was lucky. If I hadn't seen the mole change and get checked, I may not have been around in 6 months. Melanoma is a truly silent, swift deadly foe. Don't overlook the danger signs....
