"The Constitution of the United States of America, Amendment One.....Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances..." Furthermore, the right of DUE PROCESS seems to escape us, not insofat as the fine citizens we serve, but those of us in that ever stretching Thin Blue Line...Timely, even in these troubled times in the year of our Lord, 2008. Unfortunately, it seems that those who safeguard those rights, somehow have had their own rights usurped, trampled and trashed, by those who have easily forgotten just where they came from, these same streets we patrol. We now venture forth with new leadership, AGAIN, and a total misdirection from city leaders. Never fails, politics and police DO NOT mix. This year in Memphis, we have now been "honored", once again, as #1 Most Dangerous Metro area in the US, topping Detroit and New Orleans...What a great honor!, Our homicides, ever increasing daily, gang violence and plain old crime. The North Precinct continues to be a hot precinct. I don't know if you can continually tell the people that crime is down, when violence seems to be spiralling out of control...and we are embroiled, once again, in a promotional examination process that , once again, will be settled in the courts. They just can't seem to get it right without ending up in lawsuits, making lawyers wealthy, cops upset, and the public wondering....and our leadership, well, he wants us to be LAPD so bad, I think it's killing him. When we can't afford squad cars, or more officers, we can afford to change the name of all the precincts, change our uniforms, collar brass, hats......but damn, we sure look good! Colonels and Lt. Colonels, but certain EQUIPMENT is too intimidating? On top of all this, we have an Association President, duly elected, that the administration refuses to accept, taking that fight to ridiculous levels. Seems like instead of fighting crime and that tact, they'd rather fight the guys who are ACTUALLY fighting crime in the streets. Our 2008 contract negotiations are underway, and off to a thud. Memphis politics NEVER cease to amaze!

This is the Un-Official Memphis Police Web Page

I'm a collector of Police patches..a little about "MPDPhd29"...I did 18 years in healthcare before following my dream...in 1997 I began attending the Shelby County Sheriff's Academy, then on to become a Police Officer, in December 1998, I was the oldest grad of the Memphis Police Academy's largest class, 78thth Gold class at 42. I have several degrees in X-Ray, an A.S., a B.S in Allied Health and a PhD in Allied Health/Radiology Education. I have been selected to Who's Who in the Southern US, in America, the World ,and in Science & Medicine since 1993. I was born in Buffalo, New York, lived in Tampa Bay, Home of the 2003 NFL Superbowl Champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers, for many years before coming here to Memphis, home of Elvis and BBQ. We also have a large number of Community Oriented Policing substations, around the country known as "COPS"...Our units are called "COACT" units, for Community ACTion...I was assigned to the WESTWOOD COACT, the Southernmost unit in Memphis, bordering I-55 to Third St. on the North, US 61 to the East, the mighty Mississippi to the West and the Tennessee/Mississippi state line to the South..If you were speeding down US 61 either on your way to or from the Tunica Casino's, you may have met me up close and personal, as I gave out PLENTY of "Fast Driving Award Certificates" to all those flying low on 61!..... I also served the Downtown Precinct, which includes our Historic "Beale Street Police Museum", home of BB Kings, Elvis Presley's Restaurant and many other spots in the "Blues" district for almost 3 years. It has now moved to the historic Central Train Station on Main Street in the southernmost part of the Downtown district. I choose to work now in the North Precinct,Uniform Patrol, and serve on the MPA Board of Directors, our Police Union, for over 7 years now....I am a Field Training Officer

I am also a member of the Memphis Police Crisis Intervention Team, a select group of officers specially trained to handle calls involving the mentally ill, and in addition to the regular calls we answer. It has been heralded as the "Memphis Model", and police agencies all over the country look to Memphis for training and guidance in establishing this valuable service to their communities. Director Walter Crews was instrumental in establishing this unit in 1988. It is headed by Major Sam Cochran and Dr. Randy DuPont, head of the Psychiatric emergency facility at The Med, home of the Elvis Presley Trauma Center, in Memphis. These three men were honored as Law Enforcement News People of the Year 2000. I am honored to be a part of this great team.

I have been a member of the US Senate Law Enforcement Advisory Committee of Senator Lamar Alexander, Tennessee Senator, and also presented testimony read into the Congressional Record for Senate Majority Harry Reid (D) Nevada concerning cutbacks to local police departments funding..

Updated February 2008

We negotiatiated for the 2004-2006 Memorandum of Agreement between the MPA and City of Memphis which was a difficult, arduous, tedious and most of all, frustrating procedure. The MPA team worked hard for better conditions and wages for our members, obtaining a 3% raise in January and an additional 3% in July 2005.Since then, we negotiated a second contract in 2006 and got NO RAISE since 2005, our tuition reimbursement was cut and basically got nothing in that contract. In the city council's defense, they amenede the contract to allow for a one time 1% bonus in Fall 2007. Many things have happened since our last update, and once again, we prepare to head to the negotiating table in February 2008 for a new contract. We had some officers indicted and arrested, shaming our department with their ridiculous and criminal antics. Please know that they are a very, very, small minority, and NOT representative of the men and women who lay it out every day here in Memphis.

As of April 2004, we printed our 14th issue of The "MPA Memphis Blues", and was then cancelled by MPA executives in a disagreement over editorial content. This is a newspaper dedicated to news of the MPA, FOP, and officer safety and was being mailed to your home, before a difference of opinion and censorship by the MPA Executives cancelled the paper . The Blues has been reinstated since August 2007 and is again published monthly. Watch for your next issue soon.
